Bulletin Board

Although, it bothers me a little that I now can see I did not correctly center everything... I absolutely love my new counseling board. It really does describe our school as a whole.

School Pride & Courtesy

School Pride
Character Word: School Pride #19
Book: Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!
Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! is a story about creative teaching and thinking. It is a tale that celebrates originality, difference, and uniqueness. It is a book that lends itself to the lively exploration of a place and an activity that are at the center of young people’s lives: school and learning.

Lesson Description:
Describe to students that SCHOOL PRIDE is what makes your school special to you and what you love about your school. Explain to students that this can be special teachers, special rooms, the lunchroom, etc.  Read story to the 3-4 year old group separately from the K5 group. During and after reading, there will be questions that the children answer as whole group.
What is a school?
The narrator of this story is sure that Diffendoofer School is very different from other schools. Ask students to define “school” and “learning.” What and how are teachers supposed to teach? What is the job of a director/principal? Do students think that their school is different from other schools in any way? If yes, explain. If no, what is an “ordinary” school?

K5 group will also answer the questions as a group, but the K5 group will draw pictures of school that makes them feel happy inside. We will display all of the students’ answers and K5 students’ pictures inside the school.

To discuss courtesy, I read a book about being selfish. During the story the students discussed what the character should have acted to be sweeter. After our story, we discussed that being nice, sweet, or sharing is how we can be courteous. After our discussion the K5 class wrote and illustrated a class book titled Courtesy.

Counseling Conference

I had the joy to attend the Counseling Conference in Birmingham at the Sheraton Hotel. Although I was a little hesitant because I was paying out of pocket. Ha! But I am glad that I attended. I was able to listen to people's ideas and also get feedback through emails. Here are a few pictures I snapped as I was attending. Some are from my hotel room, because I thought I had a pretty cool view of the town.

Wow! This session was a full house!

Bulletin Board

Here is our new counseling bulletin board for our school! I have informed all the teachers that anytime they see a student doing one of these characteristics, that student will get to drop his or her name in the bucket. Since the child is dropping the name in, they will more likely to tell their parents about it and get an extra recognition. I hope that this board will promote more positive behavior in our school.
